The Ultimate Guide to Getting Through Airport Security Quickly

Our guide to help you in Getting Through Airport Security Quickly

We used to hate airline security.  Let’s be real—no one enjoys airport security. The long lines, the frantic shuffling of belongings, the inevitable person who forgot to take their laptop out (don’t be that person!). But after years of traveling, we’ve learned a thing or two about breezing through TSA without a hitch that can help with getting through airport security quickly.

If you want to make airport security a stress-free experience, follow these tried-and-true tips. The faster you get through, the sooner you can kick back at your gate—or better yet, the lounge!

1. Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

One of the best travel investments we’ve ever made? TSA PreCheck. For $85, you get five years of access to the shorter, faster security line—no need to remove shoes, belts, laptops, or liquids. If you travel internationally, go for Global Entry ($120), which includes PreCheck and speeds up customs when returning to the U.S. This is our number one hack for getting through airport security quickly.

Pro Tip: Many travel credit cards will reimburse your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee, so be sure to check that out!

2. Dress Smart for Security

Security is NOT the time for lace-up boots or excessive jewelry. Here’s what works best to get you through airport security quickly:

āœ” Slip-on shoes (no laces = faster removal if required)

āœ” Minimal metal jewelry (set off fewer alarms)

āœ” Layers(jackets need to come off, so make it easy)

āœ” Comfy socks (because no one wants to walk barefoot through security!)

3. Pack Your Bag Like a Pro

The more organized your bag, the less time you’ll spend digging for items at security. Follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids (3.4 oz bottles, 1 quart-sized bag, 1 bag per person) and keep it easily accessible. We have a detailed post for you here The Ultimate Guide to Traveling Light: Tips for Packing LIke a Pro“.

šŸ”¹ Laptop & electronics? Have them in an easy-to-reach compartment.

šŸ”¹ Liquids? Keep them in a clear, zip-top bag at the top of your carry-on for quick, easy access.

šŸ”¹ Medications & baby formula? TSA allows these in larger quantities, but separate them ahead of time. You may need to undergo additional security screening, so just be sure to plan for a little extra time.

Pro Tip: Some airports now have CT scanners that let you keep laptops and liquids in your bag—another reason PreCheck is a game-changer!

4. Know the Rules & Follow Them

TSA has some strict (but sometimes confusing) rules. Save yourself the trouble by knowing them ahead of time:

🚫 No oversized liquids (unless medically necessary)

🚫 No sharp objects (tweezers and small scissors under 4 inches are okay)

🚫 No wrapped gifts (security may need to unwrap them)

Check the TSA website for updates before you fly!

5. Choose the Right Security Line

Not all security lines are created equal! Look for these signs of a faster-moving line:

āœ… Business travelers (they know the drill)

āœ… Families with TSA PreCheck (shorter process)

āœ… Fewer people in general (obvious but effective!)

Avoid lines with large tour groups, families with strollers, or first-time flyers—these tend to move slower.

6. Be Ready When It’s Your Turn

Our guide to help you in Getting Through Airport Security Quickly

The biggest reason lines slow down? People who aren’t ready! Sometimes we are amazed that people still don’t know the drill! Before you step up to the conveyor belt:

āœ” Have your ID & boarding pass out (or better yet, use mobile boarding passes)

āœ” Remove your jacket, belt, and anything from your pockets

āœ” Place your bag, shoes, and electronics on the belt in one smooth motion

Pro Tip: Follow the ā€œTSA shuffleā€ā€”shoes off, laptop out, liquids ready, walk through, grab your stuff, and GO!

7. Use the ā€˜Empty Pocket’ Trick

Before stepping into the scanner, put everything from your pockets into your bag instead of the bin. This prevents you from accidentally leaving something behind and speeds up your screening. I take my watch off, and take my wallet, phone, keys, and change from my packet and put them into a specific pocket in my backpack. Doing it the same way every time helps me ensure I don’t forget anything and helps me get through airport security quicker.

8. Travel During Off-Peak Hours

If you have flexibility, fly during less busy times to avoid long security lines. Early mornings, late nights, and mid-week flights (Tuesday & Wednesday) tend to be quieter.

9. Download the MyTSA App

The MyTSA app gives real-time security wait times, lets you check what you can bring, and offers tips based on your airport. Some airports even let you schedule an appointment to get through security, so be sure to check this out at the airport you’ll be traveling from.

10. Stay Calm & Keep Moving

The more relaxed and prepared you are, the smoother security will go. Stay patient, follow instructions, and don’t be ā€œthat personā€ holding up the line. Trust me, everyone will thank you!

Final Thoughts

Airport security doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With the right preparation, you can glide through like a pro and start your trip off on the right foot.
