How to Overcome Your Fear of Flying and Actually Enjoy the Journey

Our top tips and tricks to overcoming your fear of flying

Flying can feel intimidating, especially if you’re prone to anxiety or have seen recent headlines about airline mishaps. Trust me, I get it—my mom had a huge fear of flying. It was so bad that it almost kept her from getting on a flight to be at the birth of my first child (and her first grandchild). If you’re the person gripping the armrests, analyzing every little noise, and watching the flight attendants for signs of distress, we’re here to tell you that after traveling full-time and flying thousands of miles, we know that air travel is not only incredibly safe, but also something you can actually enjoy with the right mindset and tools. We hope that this blog post will help you on your way to overcoming your fear of flying.

If your fear of flying is holding you back from experiencing the world, this guide is for you! Let’s break down why flying is safer than you think and how you can ease your nerves before, during, and after a flight. ✈️

Man anxiously watch a plane take off. How to overcome your fear of flying in this blog post.

Why Flying is Safer Than You Think

Here are some facts to help you overcome your fear of flying

1. The Odds Are in Your Favor

Statistically speaking, flying is by far the safest mode of transportation. The odds of being in a plane crash? Around 1 in 11 million. Compare that to a 1 in 101 chance of being in a car accident, and suddenly, stepping onto a plane feels a lot more reassuring.

2. Planes Are Built to Handle Almost Anything

Turbulence? Completely normal. Pilots and flight attendants experience it daily and know exactly how to handle it. Modern aircraft are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, and pilots undergo rigorous training to ensure your safety at all times.

3. Pilots Are Highly Trained Professionals

Every commercial pilot has logged thousands of flight hours before they ever step into the cockpit of your flight. They’re trained for every possible scenario, meaning they know exactly what to do in any situation. So, if they look relaxed, you should be too!

How to Calm Your Flight Anxiety Before Takeoff

Use these methods to help you overcome your fear of flying

1. Choose the Right Seat

Your seat choice can make a big difference in how you feel during the flight. If turbulence makes you anxious, sit over the wings—this is the most stable part of the plane. Prefer more space? An aisle seat lets you move around easily. Love watching the world from above? A window seat can provide a calming distraction.

2. Get the Facts on Turbulence

One of the biggest fears flyers have is turbulence, but here’s the truth: turbulence is not dangerous. It’s like hitting a pothole in the sky—annoying but totally safe. Pilots anticipate turbulence and adjust accordingly, so there’s no need to panic.

3. Distract Yourself

The more you focus on your anxiety, the worse it gets. Download your favorite TV shows, bring a gripping book, or listen to a calming playlist. Podcasts, especially funny ones, can be a great way to take your mind off the flight.

4. Try Breathing Techniques

Deep breathing can instantly calm your nervous system. Try the 4-7-8 method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. It sounds simple, but it works!

5. Visualize Your Destination

Instead of focusing on the flight, shift your mindset to where you’re headed. Picture yourself strolling through cobblestone streets in Paris, lounging on a beach in Bali, or reuniting with loved ones. Focusing on the adventure ahead can ease your nerves.

What to Do During the Flight to Stay Relaxed

Do these things on the plane to help you overcome your fear of flying

1. Watch the Flight Crew

One of my favorite anxiety hacks? Keep an eye on the flight attendants. If they’re casually serving drinks and chatting, that’s a good sign that everything is perfectly normal.

2. Bring Comfort Items

Noise-canceling headphones, a cozy blanket, or even a lavender-scented essential oil can make the flight feel more relaxing. Download your favorite show, movie, or podcast or bring a book or magazine to read.

3. Stay Hydrated and Avoid Caffeine

Dehydration can make anxiety worse, so drink plenty of water. Also, skip the coffee—caffeine can heighten anxiety and make you feel more on edge.

4. Remind Yourself: Every Flight Lands

Whenever I feel uneasy, I remind myself that millions of people fly every single day, and every flight has a landing plan. Pilots train for this constantly, and flying is their full-time job. You’re in good hands!

How to Conquer Flight Anxiety for Good

Consider these tips to help you overcome your fear of flying forever

1. Consider Exposure Therapy

If your fear is severe, exposure therapy can be a game-changer. Some airports and airlines offer fear of flying courses, where you can talk to pilots, sit in a simulator, and learn the science behind flying. There are also online courses you can take, like THIS free one.

2. Talk to a Doctor

For extreme anxiety, consider speaking to a doctor or therapist. Some travelers benefit from short-term medication or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to manage their fear.

3. Keep Flying!

The more you fly, the more comfortable you’ll become. Each time you land safely, it reinforces the reality that flying is safe. Before you know it, you’ll be boarding a plane without a second thought!
