The Best Day Trip from Barcelona

We recently took an amazing day trip from Barcelona to the charming city of Tarragona, and we just had to share our adventure with you! If you’re looking for a quick escape from the bustling streets of Barcelona, Tarragona is the perfect destination. Just an hour away by train, this city offers a delightful mix of ancient Roman ruins, stunning beaches, vibrant local culture, and a magnificent cathedral that will leave you in awe.

Our journey started early in the morning from Barcelona’s Sants Station. The train ride to Tarragona was quick and comfortable, taking just about an hour. We opted for the regional train, known as the Rodalies, which is both affordable and efficient. You can purchase tickets at the station or online in advance using the Omio link below. A one-way ticket costs around €8, and trains depart frequently throughout the day.

Discovering Roman History

Once we arrived in Tarragona, we headed straight for the Roman Amphitheater. Perched on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, this ancient structure was truly a sight to behold. Imagining the gladiatorial contests that once took place here gave us chills! The amphitheater is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco, a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes several other Roman ruins scattered throughout the city.

We also visited the Roman Circus, where chariot races were held, and the Pretorium Tower, which offers stunning views of the city and sea. Entry to the amphitheater costs €5, and a combined ticket for multiple Roman sites is available for €15.

Marveling at the Tarragona Cathedral

Next, we made our way to the heart of the city to visit the Tarragona Cathedral. This stunning cathedral is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and it’s absolutely breathtaking. As we walked through its grand entrance, we were greeted by intricate carvings and beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral’s cloister, with its peaceful garden and ornate arches, was the perfect spot for a moment of reflection.

The entrance fee for the cathedral is €11, which includes access to the cloister and the Diocesan Museum, where you can learn more about the history and art of the region.

Savoring Catalan Cuisine

All that exploring made us hungry, so we set out to find some delicious Catalan cuisine. Tarragona is home to many charming restaurants and cafes. We stumbled upon a lovely spot called Restaurante El Llagut, known for its fresh seafood and traditional Catalan dishes. We indulged in some local favorites like paella and fresh seafood for Shayne. The food was incredible, and the relaxed atmosphere made it even better.

For a quick bite, you can also try one of the many tapas bars around Plaça de la Font, where you can enjoy a variety of small dishes.

Relaxing on the Beaches

With full bellies, we decided to spend the afternoon relaxing on Tarragona’s beautiful beaches. You know we are suckers for a beautiful beach, and the golden sands and clear blue water here was incredibly inviting. We took a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, soaked up the sun, and even dipped our toes in the Mediterranean Sea. Playa del Miracle is the main city beach, located just a short walk from the historic center, and it’s perfect for unwinding after a morning of sightseeing.

Exploring the Charming Streets

Before heading back to Barcelona, we spent some time wandering through Tarragona’s charming streets. The city’s historic center is filled with narrow alleyways, picturesque squares, and plenty of shops and cafes to explore. I even grabbed a new swimsuit in one of the cities cute boutiques! We loved the vibrant yet laid-back vibe of Tarragona, and it was hard to leave this enchanting city behind.

Taking a Tour

For those who prefer guided tours, there are several options available. We saw some interesting walking tours that cover the Roman history of the city, including stops at the major archaeological sites. This guided tour of Roman Tarragona is a bargain at €12. If you prefer to have everything included, here is a driving tour that departs from Barcelona and visits Sitges and Tarragona in one day.

Heading Back to Barcelona

As the day came to an end, we reluctantly made our way back to the train station. The ride back to Barcelona gave us time to reflect on our wonderful day trip and all the incredible sights we had seen. Trains back to Barcelona run frequently, so you can easily find a departure time that suits your schedule. We caught an evening train and were back in Barcelona in no time.
