How to Maximize Your PTO in 2025: Turn 10 Days Into 60+ Vacation Days
If you’re like most people in the U.S., you get around 10-15 paid time off (PTO) days each year. While that might not seem like much, with strategic planning, you can turn those 115 days into 40-60+ vacation days by aligning them with federal holidays. Let us show you how to maximize your PTO in 2025 and spend more time doing what you love — like lounging on the beach, exploring new cities, or simply recharging!
Why Strategic PTO Planning Matters
Federal holidays in the U.S. are your secret weapon to maximizing your time off. By pairing PTO days with weekends and holidays, you can create extended breaks for travel, relaxation, or adventure without burning through all your paid days.
Shayne and I have used this trick for years, and it’s been a game-changer for our travel lifestyle. Before we started traveling full-time, we carefully mapped out our PTO around holidays to stretch our vacation days as far as possible. Whether it was a week in Europe or a quick beach escape, this strategy allowed us to explore more destinations while still meeting work commitments. We’re excited to share these tips so you can do the same!
Here’s your month-by-month guide to making the most of your PTO in 2025:

Pro Tips for PTO Planning
- Submit PTO Requests Early: These prime dates are popular, so secure them as soon as your workplace allows.
- Be Flexible: If your PTO request isn’t approved for the exact dates, shift your plans to the next closest holiday or weekend. Holidays that fall on a Monday or Friday offer a little more flexibility for your planning.
- Plan Ahead: Book flights and accommodations early for the best deals. To save even more money, plan your trip around a cheap flight deal from JetSetClub.co. We save hundreds on every flight we book using Jet Set Club!
Shayne and I learned early on that getting those PTO requests in early was key to securing our dream vacations. One year we traveled to Paris over Thanksgiving and created a dreamy 10 day vacation using only 3 PTO days. We have also maximized vacation time around the 4th of July, taking 10 day trips to places like Greece and Bali while only using 3-4 days of PTO. Those memories are priceless, and with a bit of planning, you can create your own unforgettable experiences.
Why This Matters
Maximizing your PTO isn’t just about taking more vacations. It’s about creating balance, recharging, and making time for experiences that matter most to you. With this guide, you’ll have plenty of time to explore new destinations, relax with loved ones, or even take those bucket-list trips you’ve been dreaming of.
