Why Choose Train Travel in Europe?

First things first, let’s talk about why train travel is the ultimate way to explore Europe. Not only is it eco-friendly, efficient, and inexpensive, but it also offers unparalleled flexibility and convenience. With extensive networks connecting major cities and charming towns, trains provide a scenic and stress-free way to experience the continent.

Most train stations are in or near to the city centers, saving you money and time it might take you to get the airport. We recently took the train from Paris to Barcelona and departed from Gare de Lyon. This was a $15 Uber ride from our Airbnb, instead of a $65 Uber to the airport.

There are no luggage weight limits or extra fees for multiple pieces of luggage—just make sure that you’re able to lift your bag onto the train. There is no one to help you load your luggage, and you may have to climb stairs up into the train car, so make sure this is something you can navigate on your own. Additionally, there are no lengthy check-in procedures or security screening for most train travel. You simply show up a few minutes before the train leaves, buy a ticket if you don’t have one, and hop on the train.

If you’re like me and you jam-pack your vacation days running non-stop from attraction to attraction, the train offers place to catch up on relaxation and even sleep. There is something very peaceful about staring out the window as you ride silently at 185MPH through the European countryside. The train is also a good time to write a postcard to your friends, read a book, catch up on your TV shows, or continue planning your future travels. Most trains also offer free wi-fi, so you can even try to get a little work done.

If you’re traveling a distance of more than 8 hours via train, you may want to look at booking an overnight train. These trains have special sleeper cars with bunks. These are usually either a room with 6 bunks, or a room with 2 bunks. Some even have private bathrooms, like the one I took once from Poland to Austria. A bunk in a sleeper car will cost about $50-90 extra, but I think it’s worth it. You will save money not staying that night in a hotel and you won’t lose out on a whole day of travel, so it’s easy to justify the additional cost. Plus it’s a cool experience. Overnight trains also have normal seats if you don’t want to fork over the extra cash for a bunk, but you may be uncomfortable and not get much sleep.

Booking Your Tickets

When it comes to booking train tickets in Europe, the options can seem overwhelming. But fear not! With a bit of research and planning, you can snag great deals and secure your seats with ease. Start by visiting the official websites of national railway companies, such as SNCF in France or Deutsche Bahn in Germany, to book tickets for domestic journeys. For international travel, consider using platforms like Rail Europe or Trainline, which offer a convenient one-stop shop for booking tickets across multiple countries. Book your train tickets as far in advance as possible, as prices usually go up the closer you are to departure. Also check the difference of pricing between classes. We have been able to purchase first class tickets for as little as $10-20 more than economy.

Choosing the Right Pass

If you’re planning to travel extensively across Europe, consider investing in a rail pass. These passes offer unlimited travel within a certain period or allow you to travel a certain number of days within a designated time frame. The Eurail Pass is a popular choice for non-European residents, offering flexible options for exploring multiple countries. Meanwhile, the Interrail Pass is available to European residents and offers similar benefits. Be sure to compare pass options and choose the one that best fits your travel itinerary and budget.

Navigating the Rail Network

Once you’ve got your tickets sorted, it’s time to hit the rails! Europe’s extensive rail network can be a bit daunting at first, but with a few key tips, you’ll be navigating like a pro in no time. Familiarize yourself with the layout of major train stations and pay attention to departure boards for information on train schedules and platforms. Most stations also have helpful staff and information desks where you can get assistance if needed. And don’t forget to download the relevant train apps for real-time updates and booking on the go.
